Case Study

New Zealand School Trustees Association (NZSTA)

NZSTA provides professional development for up to 18,000 school trustees across NZ and needed a solution to enable easy access and effective learning.

About our Client

NZSTA is a membership-based national organisation representing the interests of its member boards.

School boards of trustees are the largest single group of crown entities in the country, accountable directly to the government and the local community for the quality of education in their school.

NZSTA has a contract with the Ministry of Education to deliver a fully integrated range of services free to all boards of trustees to support and enhance boards' capability in governance and employment.

The Brief

Provide effective and accessible professional development for School Trustees

NZSTA provides professional development for up to 18,000 school trustees through throughout New Zealand.

NZSTA wanted a solution that would enable trustees to easily access their professional development programme in a way that provided effective learning.

Previously all training was delivered through two-hour workshops, which were difficult for trustees to attend, especially for those outside of the main areas where the workshops were held. Trustees are volunteers and the training and professional development is optional, which means it needs to be attractive to trustees in terms of time, ease of access, engagement and practicality so that they are encouraged to commit time to development.

NZSTA is aiming to have all current professional development seminars and workshops available via eLearning for those who prefer their professional development in this format.

Our Role

We designed and created highly engaging and interactive learning options for the Trustees Professional Development framework that encompass the governance roles that boards of trustees are responsible for. The learning is available online for easy and timely acccess.

  • Graphical animations about NZSTA & Becoming a School Trustee
  • Welcome aBoard - the first stage for new trustees introducing the scope of what a board does and their role
  • Fully immersive scenario learning for student discipline , integrating application of legislative requirements
  • A series of modules on governance roles and board activities
  • An online Parent Guide publication
  • Applying health & safety requirements in schools
  • Online assessments to become an NZSTA Accredited Trustee
  • An integrated workshop, eLearning module & assessment

The Results

Effective and accessible professional development for School Trustees.

Key outcomes:

  • Engaging & application-based learning for trustees
  • Greater accessibility 24/7, availability and timeliness of trustee professional development
  • Greatly reduced time requirement for trustees
  • Greatly reduced NZSTA training costs
  • Freed up training resource for those boards, areas and subjects which need greater tutor support
