It was really great working with Optimism. (They) took the time to understand our learning objectives and align the online activities with the needs of our learners.

There was variety in the designs and consideration of the practical nature of our apprenticeship programme. Progress was sound and we were kept up to date all the way through.

Thank you again for Optimism’s wonderful work it was a pleasure to collaborate with you, Jo and the team.

LMS Innovation Lea, Quality and Programme Development

Their Brief

ICE provides a Plumbing, Gasfitting, and Drainlaying (PGD) Apprenticeship, integrating on-the-job and off-the-job learning. The off-job learning blends face-to-face and online sessions, covering industry knowledge, theory, and practical skills.

ICE were looking to take their course to the next level by reducing reliance on traditional text-based materials and expanding the range of multimedia elements in order to promote active participation and create a more interactive learning experience.

Our Role

Our first step was to work closely with the ICE team to confirm the range of media elements to complement their existing LMS content and maximise variety.

We designed and developed a series of:

  • Introductory videos (hosted by young people)
  • 3D animation
  • Branching scenarios
  • Interactive infographics
  • Animated messages
  • Short activities for formative assessment

The content was developed in close collaboration with the ICE technical trainers, ensuring accuracy, relevance, and comprehensiveness. We captured contextualised video and photography on campus to incorporate content and imagery directly relevant to the trainees.

Scenarios and activities exploited real life practical tasks and decisions to ensure they were relatable and transferable to the trainees’ jobs.

Their Results

By incorporating multimedia elements, ICE now has an apprenticeship programme that:

  • increases engagement with learning and encourages completion
  • improves content retention through interactive content and memorable visuals, animations and videos
  • strengthens real-world application of principles and theory
  • increases accessibility by catering to a diverse audience with different strengths and preferences
  • offers more flexibility as trainees can access multimedia content using their own devices, and at their own pace and convenience.

As a result, ICE can expect increased completion rates, as well as word-of-mouth promotion about their first year apprenticeship programme through ICE.
