Discover how Optimism worked with DairyNZ's EnviroWalk to develop an app to make it easier for farmers to access and action environmental issues.

About our Client

Funded by a levy on New Zealand dairy farmers, DairyNZ invests dairy farmers’ money into a wide range of programmes – including industry research and development, promoting careers in dairying and advocating for farmers with central and regional government.

The Brief

DairyNZ supports farmers through investing in research, resource development, extension, and advocacy to ensure they lead the world in sustainable dairy farming.

DairyNZ had created a paper based checklist and supporting information for dairy farmers to complete on their farm to identify areas of environmental risk on their farm.

The purpose of this project is to develop a digital tool (app) to make it easier for farmers to assess and action environmental issues.

Our Role

Working closely with key stakeholders, we began by drafting out the user journey, then chunking the areas of environmental risk into key categories.

We then worked with the sector representatives to determine feasible actions that dairy farmers could take that would improve any areas of risk.

We created an eye-catching visual design and developed a prototype of Yes / No questions that would result in suggested solutions or actions while allowing space for users to add custom actions for their farm. Once we had trialed these statements with a user group, we then set about building a backend database so that users could save their action plans, download plans, and generate a printed action plan with spaces to date and sign off actions as they are completed.

The result is a multi-faceted solution comprised of the following components:

  1. An online self-rating tool to help dairy farmers identify areas of improvement on their farms
  2. A downloadable app (for both Apple and Android) so that users can complete their risk assessments offline if connectivity is limited.

A supporting database allowing users to save a plan, version control a plan, continue a plan, add custom actions to a plan, print a plan, or download a plan.

The Results

DairyNZ's EnviroWalk app makes it easier for farmers to assess their fertiliser use, effluent, waterways, races, cropping, water use and irrigation, and create an action plan on their smartphone. It replaces a paper version and is already receiving good reviews from farmers, having been downloaded over 3000 times.
