Mercury

Discover Mercury's journey to creating online learning modules across multiple sites and corporate offices.

About our Client

Mercury is an electricity generation and retailing company that produces energy from renewable sources, including hydro, geothermal, solar and wind power with a focus on sustainable and eco-friendly practices. Their services also include energy management solutions and advice on reducing energy consumption.

Their Brief

Before merging with Mercury Energy, Mighty River Power had partnered with Optimism to create their health and safety learning solution.  The newly formed Mercury then contacted us to revise and redevelop the existing eLearning module to align with Mercury’s updated messaging, thinking and processes around health and safety.

As well as standard health and safety, Mercury needed a learning solution for Entry Approval Competency (EAC) for both their employees and contractors in order to meet site requirements.  The solution was to be hosted on their own LMS, ChargeUp.

An additional interesting challenge was to make the learning available in four different languages: English, Samoan, Tongan and Filipino.

Our Role

To begin, we liaised with Mercury’s leaders to clarify their objectives and messaging for two modules: Health & Safety and EAC. Next we worked intensively with Mercury’s subject matter experts across a variety of sites to make sure the content was relevant to all the different generation sites as well as corporate offices.

To create relevant scenarios for Mercury’s team, we made use of existing site photography and built relatable interactions.  We developed both modules with a language picker at the start of the module.

In Mercury’s LMS, we set up the two modules as a competency certificate, so that every 2 years learners receive a reminder to complete modules as refresher training.

Their Results

Mercury now has:

  • increased reporting of incidents and near misses
  • increased completions of health and safety training
  • better visibility of health and safety completions

Site hazard identification activity
Likelihood vs impact activity
